- an information board to provide details for the more curious

- the multi-dimensional Lunar Pool to recall the landscaping of the tidal Pool of Liverpool (in which the dock was built) and to represent the pull of the moon on the tides

- a red sandstone retaining wall emerging from the ground to continue the underlying bedrock upwards

Not all visitors fully appreciate the significance of these interpretation features at first glance but, like a good book, they are immediately visually stimulating and have layers of interest to be discovered on closer study.

For the 300th anniversary of the opening of Old Dock on 31st August 1715, Hinchliffe Heritage teamed up with David Cottrell of The Liverpolitan (see http://theliverpolitan.com ) to write Old Dock, Liverpool, a booklet for popular consumption. The booklet was sponsored by Liverpool One and endorsed by National Museums Liverpool . Independent critics have said:

I am very impressed not only with its quality but with the way it helps to bring to the attention of the

public and worldwide importance of what happened in August 1715. The production is excellent…

It is very well-produced and an interesting read.

Old Dock, Liverpool is available for £5 from all National Museums Liverpool outlets.
